People with special needs require special attention and care. These children suffer from various diagnoses including developmental delays, medical conditions, congenital defects, and psychiatric conditions. These illnesses are usually diagnosed at birth and limit the effected children to reach their full potentials. There are famous celebrities who have first-hand experience in taking care of children with special needs. Here are examples of some celebrities who have relatives that require special needs:

Kris Aquino’s first-born son, Josh was diagnosed with autism. It was hard for Kris to admit her son’s condition at first. As time went by, she finally understood that in order to help her son she needs to fully accept his condition. Besides taking special care of Josh, both her sons have become targets of critical netizens making Kris’ responsibility as a mother even tougher.

Candy Pangilinan also admitted that she has an autistic child name Quentin. She also admitted that she blamed herself for her son’s condition. However, she was able to get strength from God that helped her face her struggles:

“I never questioned God. As a matter of fact, I went to Him agad.”

She wrote a book about being a mother to a child with autism entitled “Mommy Dear: Our Special Love”.

Former Binibining PIlipinas first runner-up, Vickie Rushton has a brother, Kian who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Despite her busy schedule, Vickie maintains her bond with her brother as much as she can.

Andrea’s brother, Kenneth is also diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Andrea emphasizes that she will protect her brother at all costs especially against those who make fun of his condition.

Ruby’s son, Don AJ was diagnosed with autism. They recently celebrated Don AJ’s moving up ceremony and Ruby cannot be more proud of her son.

“Sometimes when the intervention is not full, they cannot show your love back. There were very painful times when David was around five, he was not hugging me, not saying I love you, he could not look me in the eye. And nothing is more painful to a mother.”

There are lots of people who don’t take these special needs seriously. Some make fun of them because of how different they look or how they are unable to communicate like regular people. But we should be more informed about their conditions because unlike us, they don’t get much choice in how they get to live their lives.
