Duterte, who is a know ironfisted leaders, wants all people involved in illegal substance to have their lives ended, disregarding the importance of due process and human rights. On the other hand, Leni emphasized the importance of human rights and how it should also be entitled to the people who had been doing illegal activities. She said that rehabilitation is a better tool to eliminate the problem of illegal substance. She gave countries like Portugal as the model for a successful campaign against illegal substance.
Lately, the President has been indicating that he wants to go down from his position as the President. If following the constitution, Leni will replace him until 2022. However, Duterte had been reiterating that Leni is an incompetent public servant.
He furthermore said that he would prefer to have the country under dictatorship than to have Leni replace him as the president of the country. He believes that this will transform people’s lives.
Leni is not putting her one foot out on this one. In her recent speech at the 2018 Ramon Magsaysay Awards ceremony, she took a hard swipe on Duterte by giving words of encouragement to the awardees.
Her speech is not filled with expletives, insensitive jokes, or accusations against the President. Instead, she told the audience and the awardees to always value courage and empathy as these are better than Duterte’s proposal of dictatorship.
“Quiet courage and empathy and leaders that put in the hard work of actually transforming the lives of people are rarities in these times when dictatorship is claimed by some to be better,” she said.
“When those trusted by the electorate threaten lives instead of protect them, divide the nation instead of unite it, attack people’s cherished beliefs instead of nourishing them, and present themselves only through empty promises as the antidote to what they say are outdated and decaying ideas like democracy, we don’t move towards a better future,” she added.
Robredo also said Duterte’s criticisms against her was just being used to distract the people from seeing the current administration’s mistakes.
“The allegations made by the president are recycled rants conveniently used to deflect attention from the failures of this administration,” she said.
