We all know that working abroad entails a lot of hardship and sacrifices, but due to poverty and lack of a decent source of income in the country, most of our kababayans would still gamble their chances to work abroad just to provide the needs of their family.
But sadly, not all aspiring Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) have good luck when it comes to securing employment abroad, and worse, some of them are landing at the hands of a cruel employer. What hurts most is when their own employment agency and fellow Filipino is the one who treated them badly.
Just like the experience of these Mindanao natives who recently seek the help of veteran broadcaster Raffy Tulfo to complain about their employment agency who did not just give them a job they promised, but also treated them like a prisoner.
According to Mylene Abdul and friends, they flew all the way to Manila to apply for a job in Riyadh but their agency and the owner itself just locked them inside a boarding house and would even inflict cruelty amongst them.
The group narrated how Madame Aisa Balawi of iEmploy Agency would lock them in the house every day and inflict physical violence against them. Luckily, they were able to escape and went to straight to Tulfo’s program.
Because of this, Tulfo coordinated with the police to conduct a rescue operation in the agency’s safe house at Imus, Cavite. During the operation, the captives got emotional to finally be freed but their emotions also shoot up when Madame Aisha’s caretaker named Beth denied all the maltreatment the aspiring OFWs experienced.
Some of the captives revealed that Madame Aisha would often threaten them to pay P30,000 if they escape and not pursue the contract with the agency.
“Pinangarap ko po talagang mag-ibang bansa dahil malaki ang sahod, hindi ko po akalain na ganito ang mangyayari sa’kin dito sa Manila. Kahit dito pala kapwa Pilipino namin, agent pa lang kami mina-maltrato na kami,” Mylene said.
But the group refused to file a case against Madame Aisha and instead decided to just live a peaceful life with their families in their respective provinces.
Tulfo’s generosity did not just end during the rescue operation as he also bought a plane ticket for the victims and even gave them a shopping spree to buy pasalubong for their family back home.
“Hindi ko akalain na may tutulong pa sa amin sa kabila ng aming pinagdaanan… pagpalain po kayo ng Panginoon at nawa lahat ng tao na nangangailangan ay matulungan ninyo,” one of the aspiring OFW said.
