Yesterday, the Filipino people got “shookt” after Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra announced that President Rodrigo Duterte signed a Proclamation No 572 revoking the amnesty given by the government to opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.
According to the proclamation signed by the President last August 31, 2018, the amnesty awarded to Trillanes in connection with his failed attempt to put an end to the Arroyo administration by staging a coup d’etat during the Oakwood Mutiny in 2003 and Manila Peninsula Seige in 2007 was void from the start.
The proclamation stated that this is due to Trillanes’ failure to comply with necessary requirements to qualify the amnesty program; such requirement includes an application for amnesty and expression of guilt.
Despite the absence of the said requirements, former Department of National Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin still approved Trillanes’ amnesty.
“Despite former LTSG (Lieutenant Senior Grade) Trillanes IV’s failure to apply for amnesty and refusal to admit his guilt, his name was nonetheless included among those granted amnesty pursuant to Department of National Defense [DND] Ad Hoc Committee Resolution No. 2 approved by former Secretary of National Defense Voltaire T. Gazmin,” the proclamation stated.
“This proclamation shall take effect immediately,” the proclamation added.
Duterte who is currently on his 4-day official visit in Israel also instructed the Department of Justice and the Court Martial of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to pursue the necessary criminal and administrative case against the opposition Senator.
The President also directed the AFP and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to arrest Trillanes and send him to a detention facility “where he had been incarcerated for him to stand trial for crimes he is charged with.”
In defense, Trillanes said that Duterte’s latest move to get rid of his is just another attempt of “political persecution”.
“Ito ay it’s a clear case of political persecution dahil wala silang mahanap na ibang kaso sakin!” Trillanes said in a press briefing at the Senate.
“Ito ay isang malaking kalokohan. Alam niyo po hindi naman ako bibigyan ng amnesty kung hindi ako nagcomply sa mga requirements,” he added.
The opposition Senator reiterated that this desperate move by Duterte only shows what kind of leader he is, a dictator kind of leader.
“Itong pangyayari na ito should be clear to everyone na itong si Mr. Duterte ay isang diktador! Hindi siya rumerespeto sa mga institusyon so kaya ganito tayo,” Trillanes added.
When asked if he will peacefully come with authorities once they arrested him, here is what Trillanes has to say: “Eh kung ipapaaresto eh di sasama ko, at mag-iimpake!” he said with a smile on his face.
