As a way of commemorating the 46th anniversary of Martial Law, Vice President Leni Robredo told the public to stay vigilant and resist any attempts from government officials who are trying to return the state of the country under dictatorship.

In her speech for the Mass for Peace at the De La Salle University in Manila, Robredo said the dark past of the Marcos regime should never happen.

Former president and Dictator Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in September 21, 1972.
Never again to Martial law.

Robredo also said that the public must protect democracy at all costs. She then argued that the Duterte administration’s advocacy in shifting to federalism might hurt the democracy of this country.

Dapat natin itong patatagin, at ‘di pakialaman ang konstitusyon na sinasandigan nito,” she said.

According to records of international human rights organizations and various Philippine government records, there were about 70,000 people apprehended and at least 3,000 lives lost during the Martial Law regime. Most of these people were critics of the Marcos regime who were tagged as “threats” to the country.

Despite her call on the possible threats equipped in Martial Law, netizens were still not convinced by Leni’s words. They mostly disregarded the threats and just accused her of just highlighting her political color.
