Every country has its own national anthem and this song symbolizes the country’s history, culture, and pride. Since every national anthem also represents the values of a certain country, citizens are expected to sing it from the heart and in the most respectful manner.
In the Philippines, Section 2 of Republic Act No. 8491 otherwise known as the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines states that, “Reverence and respect shall at all times be accorded the flag, the anthem, and other national symbols which embody the national ideals and traditions and which express the principles of sovereignty and national solidarity.”

In other words, any person regardless of his or her nationality should at all times respect the Philippine flag, national anthem, and other national symbols. That is why this California-based singer drew flak from netizens after a video of her singing the Philippine National Anthem Lupang Hinirang incorrectly went viral on social media.
According to reports, the video was taken before a baseball match happened at AT&T Stadium in San Francisco, California which means that the singer actually performed our national anthem in front of a huge foreign crowd.
Everything went well at first, but not until the singer sang the line “sa dagat mong bughaw” instead of “sa langit mong bughaw”.
It is also obvious that she is stuttering and could not properly pronounce each word in the lines “ang bituin at araw na kailan pa may di mag didilim” and “buhay ay langit sa piling mo”.
When the video went viral on social media, a lot of netizens assumed that the singer is probably a Filipina-America, but most of them also suggest that this is not an excuse for her to sing her national anthem in the most rubbish way.

These past few days, the national anthem has been a hot topic especially after Senate President Vicente Sotto III suggested to tweak the last part of the Lupang Hinirang’s lyrics.
According to Sotto, the last line which states “aming ligaya na ‘pag may may mag-aapi ang mamatay ng dahil sa yo” has a defeatist feel which does not represent the Filipino people.
“Ptay na agad eh! I have thought of a line that could replace this: ‘Aming ligaya na ‘pag may nang-aapi, ang ipaglaban kalayaan mo’,” Sotto said.
“Parang defeatist ‘yung last line sapagkat na imbis lumaban, mamatay…dapat laban, hindi paatay,” he added.
